Luke’s professional journey is a testament to what happens when hard work meets the right support system. His story began through the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) and the Vocational Wellness and Training Support (VWATS) program. This foundation allowed him to transition into Work-Based Learning, where he first began custodial work at Hale Mohalu.

The Power of Mentorship One of the most impactful parts of Luke's time at Work Now Hawaii has been the relationship with his Job Coaches. Luke is the first to admit that some responsibilities were daunting at first. "The Job Coaches really helped me with more difficult tasks I cannot do on my own, so I can learn to do them on my own," he explains.

This specialized coaching didn't just stay at the job site; it had a "spillover effect" into his personal life. By mastering difficult professional tasks, Luke found he was able to do things more independently at home, too.

Climbing the Career Ladder Recognizing his reliability, Work Now Hawaii hired Luke as a Custodial Team Member at the Foreign Trade Zone. His reputation as a dependable worker led to a significant promotion to the Work Now Hawaii AbilityOne Army Contract at Shafter Flats.

This new role is a major personal victory. Working on the base allows Luke to be closer to home and share a workplace with his father. Luke takes immense pride in his role, sharing that he truly enjoys "helping keep the Army clean." Even with his new responsibilities, he remains a dedicated team player, often stepping in to help at Hale Mohalu on weekends when the team needs him.

A Contributor to Society For Luke, the stability of his job has empowered him to become a confident, independent bus rider. Today, he feels like an important contributor to society and is proud to help pay rent at home.

"Luke was very passionate in his advice to others with disabilities about working for Work Now Hawaii." Through the progression of DVR, VWATS, and the hands-on guidance of his coaches, Luke has built a life of independence.
